What an amazing trail!  The Black bear trail was one of the most beautiful trails I have ever driven.  If you are ever planning on taking a drive in Colorado I recommend this drive.  Any high clearance , short wheel base 4x4 should get you up and over the trail without too much difficulty.  There is one fairly steep section called “the steps”. Just before the switchbacks down into Telluride.  These “steps” can be quite spooky.  The trail on the steps narrows with a river 30’ below and to the left.  In addition, the steps are  littered with scraggly rocks that will cause your vehicle to move in ways you may not be ready for.  Traversing this section of trail during a rain shower would be challenging to say the least.  The switchbacks leading down the mountain into Telluride are fairly easy as long as you know what gear you are in, not afraid of heights and have a short wheel base vehicle.  The trail is  “one way” .  You must begin on the Silverton side and  finish coming down into Telluride.  Here are a few more Photos of our trip on the Black bear trail.

All in all, a nice day trip from the Dulce area.  I’ve included an itinerary of the trip for those that are interested.
